Evie winced as the clamps enclosed both her hands, keeping them locked together in front of her. To the left and the right stood Athru soldiers, both of them encased in a type of armor she’d never seen before, and an energy weapon of some sort on their backs. It looked like it might be part of their armor, and automatically deploy in the middle of an engagement, which she supposed was useful if you needed to keep your hands free. And if these Athru were anything like the ones she’s met on the planet back beyond Omicron Terminus, they probably ran both on two legs and all four appendages depending on the need.

Esterva stood beside her, also clad in the same manacles, staring straight ahead. She’d been right, the Athru had been here. Or at least they’d been monitoring closer than Evie had thought possible. Xax stood off to the side, kept apart from her and Esterva, but the Athru hadn’t bound her yet and Evie couldn’t figure out why.

“Why don’cha git th’ other one too,” Tos said, walking in front of Evie, but looking at the Athru. “She’s part of their group.”

“Athru have no quarrel with Yax-Inax,” one of the Athru soldiers said in the Coalition’s universal language. “She is free to do as she pleases.”

Tos scoffed. “I don’ git you people.”

Evie didn’t either, but she wasn’t going to waste this chance. “Xax, make sure Sesster wakes up. He’s alive and he’s in there. But make sure he’s okay, then get off this planet. Get out of this system.” Xax nodded.

“She has nothing to fear from us, mutant,” the soldier said. “But you are not so lucky.” Evie glanced to her mother who remained stone-faced. She wasn’t going to give them an inch, and Evie could respect that.

R’resst cartwheeled up to them, coming to a stop only a few meters from where they held Evie and Esterva in front of a small Athru ship that had landed beside Tos’s ship.

I am sorry. I’ve tried to argue on your behalf, but the Athru are insistent you come with them. We didn’t know they were monitoring you.

Evie wasn’t sure if she could believe that or not, but for the moment it didn’t matter. The Claxians were pacifists; it wasn’t like they’d fight off the Athru to save Evie and her mother. She couldn’t fault them for being who they were.

If I could do more, I would.

“Just make sure Sesster gets better,” Evie replied. “You’ll have to figure out a way to communicate with Xax, but I expect you’ll give her the same courtesy you’ve shown us so far.”

Of course.

Evie turned to Tos, who still had a smirk on his wide, red face. “And just what the hell are you going to tell the fleet when you get back?”

Tos smacked his lips. “With any luck, by the time I git back, th’ fleet will be nothin’ but spare parts.”

Evie’s heart jumped into her throat. The fleet. The Tempest. “You think Rutledge is that clever?”

“Oh, I know he is.
